Day 19 of DB's Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar - Colonel E. H. Taylor Small Batch

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. Please join us in toasting to another incredible year and getting to virtually share some of our favorite bottles from this past year with you!

**This review has been completed by using a Glencairn glass and neat if you want to compare the same tasting notes as DB’s Bourbon Trail. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**

Enough of me rambling, let’s dive into what brought us here!

Message on the bottle:

"As founding father of the bourbon industry, Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. left an indelible legacy. His dedication to distilling began at the close of the Civil War when he purchased O.F C. Distillery. There, he developed innovative techniques that are still in use today. Made by hand, this Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey has been aged inside century old warehouses constructed by E.H. Taylor, Jr.  Barrels are evaluated and selected to create a perfect blend of distinctive character that is like no other. This bourbon is a true sipping bourbon that honors the uncompromising legacy of E.H. Taylor, Jr."

Review:

Happy Taylor Tuesday! I don't know about y'all but it's always a good day when we have some E. H. Taylor in our glass!

In 2023 - this bottle has won 2 Double Gold's (Denver and San Francisco), Double Platinum (ASCOT), and a Silver at the International Spirits Challenge!

Y'all ready to dive into this award winning bourbon or what? Let's go!

Nose:

  • The nose of this comes out swinging with a sweetness punch! It's filled with Caramel, Butterscotch, and Popcorn! It's definitely one of the more welcoming 100 proof bourbons that's for sure!

Palate:

  • The sweetness carries over the from the nose with notes of Vanilla and Sweet Caramel. As the palate expands, here's comes the spice! It's filled with a nice Baking Spice and cinnamon.

Finish:

  • As the finish lingers and warms you up with a Kentucky Hug on this really cold day - it leaves you with a nice Cinnamon Spice and Vanilla Cream sweetness to the pour!

Final Thoughts:

Colonel E. H. Taylor was a founding father within the bourbon industry and crafting a bourbon this good, I can understand why. EHT is one of my favorite brands of all time with its Single Barrel being my number 1.

The Small Batch is the perfect alternative daily sipper if you are able to find it regularly. This pour is a sweet and spice and everything nice. From the nose it offers a nice sweet caramel and butterscotch aroma that runs right into the palate that pairs well with vanilla and baking spices.

The finish is medium in length at 100 proof and offers the perfect amount of spice with its vanilla cream finish.

Great bourbon and history, what else can we ask for!

Cheers y’all!
