Day 23 of DB's Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar - Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Strength OESQ

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. Please join us in toasting to another incredible year and getting to virtually share some of our favorite bottles from this past year with you!

**This review has been completed by using a Glencairn glass and neat if you want to compare the same tasting notes as DB’s Bourbon Trail. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**

Enough of me rambling, let’s dive into what brought us here!

Day 23 of DB’s Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar

Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Strength OESQ - Specifically Selected by Four Roses for South Carolina Series #0029 (20% Rye Mashbill)

Proof:

  • 116.2 Proof (58.1%)

Distillery:

  • Four Roses Distillery (Lawrenceburg, KY)

Age Statement:

  • 10 Years 8 Months

Message on the bottle:

"The bottle you're holding right now is a perfect example of why Four Roses is unique. We're the only Bourbon distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mash-bills, creating 10 distinct, handcrafted Bourbon recipes. Occasionally, a few exceptionally-aged barrels will present themselves, and I personally set them aside to allow a few of our retailers to come in for a private tasting and selection. Each barrel selected is bottled without chill-filtration at barrel strength. Since we add no water, and along with the result of a little extra aging, each barrel yields only about 160 bottles, which we then private label for our retailers to offer to their customers.

We are happy that you are about to experience and enjoy this rare, straight-from-the-barrel Bourbon. It was hand-selected by your retailer for you to sip, savor and proudly share."

Cheers,

Brent Elliott (Master Distiller)

Review:

Has anyone ever wondered why it's "four" roses? Why not three, five, or a dozen roses? Or am I the only weird one who thinks these kind of things...?

Well - if you're anything like me - you're in luck! Their website provides a little insight into this!

FOUR ROSES BEGAN WITH A LOVE STORY DATING BACK TO 1888
It all started with a marriage proposal and a corsage of four roses... Explore the story of how a romantic gesture grew to help establish one of the world's most beloved bourbon brands.

If you want to dive into more of the story (it's a good history time line), I definitely suggest checking out their Our Story page!

Now it's time to write our own love story and exchange the four roses corsage for this pour we have in our glass! Let's dive in!

Nose:

  • Black Cherry, Caramel, Banana Foster

Palate:

  • Banana, Vanilla, Caramel, Cherry, Cinnamon Stick

Finish:

  •  Banana, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Rye Spice

Final Thoughts:

I love, love. I mean - I love Four Roses. What a cool story that brought a long history of great bourbon that we get to enjoy today.

Specifically with this bottle, I think they knocked it out of the park. Bourbon and Bananas?! Who would have ever thought, the taste would naturally go there but it does. It's filled with a delicate sweetness that shouldn't be there at 116 proof! Outside of bananas, I get sweet caramel, vanilla, and black cherry before that cinnamon spice and that 20% rye comes rolling into the finish.

These bottles normally only pop up once a year and I'm really excited that I got to share this pour with you all! After this pour, I'm not sure if I will ever be able to let a bottle sit on the shelf again!

Cheers y’all!
