Day 13 of DB's Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar - Larceny Barrel Proof B522

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. Please join us in toasting to another incredible year and getting to virtually share some of our favorite bottles from this past year with you!

**This review has been completed by using a Glencairn glass and neat if you want to compare the same tasting notes as DB’s Bourbon Trail. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**

Enough of me rambling, let’s dive into what brought us here!

Day 13 of DB’s Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar

Larceny Barrel Proof B522

Proof:

  • 123.8 Proof (61.9%)

Distillery:

  • Old Fitzgerald Distillery at Heaven Hill Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Message on the bottle:

"John E. Fitzgerald was a treasury agent, who at the time, was the only person legally allowed to carry keys to the rickhouses. He often gave in to temptation and freely took from the best bourbon barrels - uncut at barrel proof.

Today, you can taste this liquid in much the same way as John E. Fitzgerald. Larceny Barrel Proof Small Batch Bourbon is made from a mingling of 6 to 8 year old Bourbon that is bottled uncut and without chill filtration. This Bourbon honors both the superb taste of this lawless treasury agent and the wheated Bourbon legacy of the Old Fitzgerald brand"

Price Point:

**At DB’s Bourbon Trail we utilize an app called BoozApp (not sponsored - we wish!) to ensure we are getting at least a fair price on our bourbon before purchasing. Nothing is worse than getting taken advantage of by a flipper playing the supply/demand game**

  • Average MSRP:

    • $59.99

  • Fair Price:

    • $91.05

  • Shelf Price:

    • $93.64

  • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

    • <$60.00

Review:

Larceny is one of the most well known wheated bourbons on the market that that can be easily found. Larceny Barrel Proof is a little different with its multiple releases throughout the year and most places is consider allocated. With it having multiple releases, each bottle is never the same which allows the hunt to go on! Larceny is not just popular because of its name - it has the awards to follow it! Most recently Larceny Barrel Proof won Double Platinum Best Wheated Bourbon for A123 and Double Gold for B523.

Nose:

  • Even with the high proof this pour is incredibly inviting! The first note I really pick up on is brown sugar and then vanilla and caramel come out. Throughout the nose, I get hints of hazelnut as well.

Palate:

  • The palates picks up right where the nose left off. A sweet combination of brown sugar, and caramel. What I really enjoy about this pour is that it kind of reminded me of a cinnamon grahm cracker.

Finish:

  • The finish is long and strong baby! It has such a sweetness with a syrupy feel and brown sugar - but after that comes the heat! It resembles Big Red Gum and it lingers for a while.

Final Thoughts:

Two back to back days of high proof wheaters?! Who decided to do this? I like that guy!

With that being said, Larceny Barrel Proof is one of my favorite high proof bourbons! Something this high proof should not be this sweet and enjoyable on the palate. The brown sugar and sweetness pairs perfectly with the heat. If you are not a fan of the high proofs - a tad of water or a large ice cube really does the trick. Both ways are incredible and the taste profiles brings such a pleasant experience and this is a must buy in my opinion!

Cheers y’all!
