Day 12 of DB's Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar - Old Elk Wheated Single Barrel Select

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. Please join us in toasting to another incredible year and getting to virtually share some of our favorite bottles from this past year with you!

**This review has been completed by using a Glencairn glass and neat if you want to compare the same tasting notes as DB’s Bourbon Trail. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**

Enough of me rambling, let’s dive into what brought us here!

Review:

I love wheaters, yes I do! I love wheaters, how 'bout you?! I was really pumped when I saw that Gibby's selected an Old Elk Straight Wheated Bourbon and decided to look at Old Elk's Website to see what it's all about!

10/10 they say it better than I ever could and they didn't disappoint here!

Wheaters, come gather ‘round because this one's for you. A delicious and well-balanced wheated bourbon is something every whiskey lover should get their hands on. Ours is a chance for us to show you and the world what we’re capable of. By using our expertise in creating our delicious flagship bourbon, we tweaked our recipe and upped the wheat and kept the corn at the minimum. Our wheated bourbon consists of 51 percent corn, 45 percent wheat and four percent malted barley. The result? A liquid that allows for each ingredient to not only shine on its own, but highlights what happens when success meets craft.

Nose:

  • The nose of this pour packed with flavor and sweetness. Caramel is what overrides the rest but it's filled with notes of vanilla bean, chocolate and hints of cherry peeks through!

Palate:

  • The caramel notes continue to own the taste portfolio here - and I'm all here for it! The caramel reminds me of something a little different than usual. It kind of reminds me of the Salted Caramel Cream you can get from Starbucks. Outside of the caramel there's a robust Cinnamon Spice that brings the heat and notes of Cherry still hanging out.

Finish:

  • The finish of this pour is long and just doesn't want to say good bye. I'm definitely about it! Can you guess what flavor is the key contributor here? Very much like the nose and palate - Sweet Caramel! It also contains a really nice balance of baking spices throughout.

Final Thoughts:

I love when sweetness and proof are able to coincide together. Old Elk has been coming out with some top tier pours here lately and I am impressed with this pour. A wheater, that's high proof, and a Gibby's store pick - What more could you ask for?!

Cheers y’all!
